Born in Houston, Texas, Osteen was raised in a family of Christian preachers. His father, John Osteen, was a Southern Baptist pastor, and his mother, Dodie Osteen, was a Pentecostal pastor.
After graduating high school, Osteen attended Oral Roberts University, majoring in radio and television communications. In 1999, his father passed away, and Osteen stepped in as the pastor of Lakewood Church.
Osteen quickly grew the church from 5,000 to 43,000 members, making it the largest in the United States. Osteen‘s message focuses on the power of positive thinking and the joy of living. He emphasizes the importance of living a life of faith, hope, and love. His sermons were broadcast on television, radio, and the internet. They have been translated into 35 languages and have reached millions of people.

On The View in 2009, cohost Whoopi Goldberg questioned Osteen about whether LGBT people are welcome at his church. They are, but “homosexuality is not God’s best,” he retorted. He returned the following year and failed to elaborate on the statement. He declared, “I don’t think it’s God’s best for your life. “I don’t think God made us in the best way possible.”
In a conversation with Larry King in 2014, Osteen provided some of his most in-depth commentary on LGBTQ problems. Osteen responded, “I believe that Scripture says that it’s a sin, but I always follow that, you know what, we’re not against anybody. I don’t want to preach about it because there are so many things I don’t understand. Only in interviews does it come up.
