Former power rangers star Andrew Gray is labelled “abusive” after seemingly being verbally abusive to his on-screen girlfriend in the ‘bling empire’. Fans are horrified from the scene and demand for a ‘trigger warning’ before the screening. According to viewers, they see the characters being in an “abusive” relationship and Andrew’s character is a ‘gaslighter’.
As soon as the show was out, viewers began binging the Netflix show. It is supposed to be a more realistic portrayal of ‘crazy rich Asians’. Though the show is highly picked for binging, viewers have their issues.
The fans are accusing Netflix of not putting up a trigger warning on the topic of abuse and relationships. In the show, Kelly Mi and Andrew Gray are in a relationship and things get pretty bad.
The controversy of Andrew Gray’s portrayal of a “toxic” boyfriend
As soon as the episodes arrived on Netflix, the first episode starts off strong. Andrew apparently yells at Kelly for going shopping and not taking him along. “What the f**k is going on?”, he shouts. Whenever Kelly gets the yelling, she turns to the camera and says “Unfortunately this is not the first time Drew’s yelled at me or spoken to me this way.”
In another episode, Kelly talks about her relationship with her friend Kevin. For this also, Andrew yells at her and asks why she needs to discuss matters of their relationship with friends. To Andrew’s irrational behaviour, Kelly decides to leave the relationship.
However, at the end of the series, no one really knows if they are still together. While the co-stars can easily forgive one another, fans are traumatized. They believe that Andrew went out of hand and was horrified by his “abusive nature”. Many fans also took to Twitter to express the discomfort they felt while viewing the show.
