Virginia Patton Moss, who made a lasting impression in the 1946 holiday classic It’s a Wonderful Life, has passed away. According to Variety, on August 18 in Albany, Georgia, Moss, the last surviving adult cast member from It’s a Wonderful Life, passed away.

She lived for 97 years. Karolyn Grimes, a former child star in It’s a Wonderful Life, took to Facebook to share her grief. “Angel number two has arrived! She is Virginia Patton Moss. She lived to be 97 years old. She portrayed Mary Bailey, Harry’s wife, in the classic film It’s a Wonderful Life! She’s with Cruse, the man she loved, now. Everyone will miss her.”
What Virginia Patton’s Early life
Moss was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 25, 1925. Cruse W. Moss, whom she wed in 1949. They were married for three decades when they produced three children. Cruse died in 2018.
Though she was the niece of General George S. Patton, Moss first tried her hand at acting on stage. This experience helped her gain roles in films. Her breakout part came in Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life, a classic Christmas film that has stood the test of time since its 1946 debut.
About Her Career
Moss began her career in show business while still an undergraduate at the University of Southern California. She appeared in stage productions and film cameos. She gave numerous interviews about her time on the set of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and often did so till the end of her life.
Cruse W. Moss, Moss’ husband, stated in 2012 that his wife Virginia was the only girl to be contracted personally by Frank Capra. Everything else in that movie was borrowed from another production company. Nonetheless, Frank Capra signed Ginny for that film even though she was not affiliated with the business.
Why Did Moss Quit Acting?
After It’s a Wonderful Life’s release, Moss acted for only a few more years before focusing on her business career. She then continued her career by starring in the Western picture Black Eagle, the drama The Burning Cross, and the film noir A Double Life. After the premiere of The Lucky Stiff in 1949, which was her last film, she retired from acting. According to Variety, Moss claimed that she decided to quit in 2012 and that “I couldn’t picture myself doing that for the rest of my life.”
