What inspired “To Your Eternity”?
After realizing that her ailing grandma was likely to die, manga artist Yoshitoki Oima came up with the title To Your Eternity. She was just confident of the title’s nuance at first, but she couldn’t make up her mind. She eventually decided on To Your Eternity with the help of her coworkers. The choice of a fantastical setting for the manga was made for the creative freedom it provided, with magical beings opening up new possibilities. She relates To Your Eternity to her earlier works, stating that while A Silent Voice is about characters in the present confronting their past, To Your Eternity is about characters in the future.
In Mardock Scramble, A Silent Voice, and To Your Eternity, she also suggests delving into the issue of death. Although the scenario altered before the series began, the character Fushi was inspired by Ōima’s work in primary school. Fushi was supposed to be a female protagonist at first, but a coworker suggested a male protagonist for a different appeal. Oima stated that she favors neutral female characters and intended to make the protagonist neutral. Each volume’s cover illustrates a character’s dream, such as the first, which shows an unidentified adolescent discovering freedom. Fushi does not want to forget the individuals he encounters on his excursions, according to Oima.
