What Has Happened
The plot opens in the year 2126. A multiplayer online role-playing game is released which is popping off among gamers because of its unusually high ability for the player to interact with the game. After an intense twelve-year run, the game servers are about to be shut down.
Ainz Ooal Gown, a guild within the game is supposedly the strongest guild in the game. After twelve years since the guild was formed, only four of the members remain, the other 37 eventually quit the game.
Meanwhile, the headquarters in The Great Tomb of Nazarick were being retained by a skeletal “Overlord” character named Momonga, who continued to play as the guild leader.
After news of the game’s shutdown spreads, he invites the remaining guild members into the game.
Only one of them appears and that too for a short while before leaving. Momonga is upset by his friend’s lack of significance for this game now and accepts the fact that everyone has their own private life to tend to.
He later discovers that the game didn’t actually disappear. He gets trapped inside the game with his avatar. He goes through several changes and tries to reach out to his friends for help.
