The plot revolves around the life of an introvert and professional shogi player, Rei Kiriyama, as he eventually grows out of his introversion and excels in sports as well as socializing.

What Has Happened
The story begins along the banks of the Sumida River in Tokyo. In Shinkawa, Rei Kirimiya, an orphan and the main character, is left to fend for himself. The Kawamoto family’s home is set in Tsukuda, connected to the town Rei lives in, viz.
Shinkawa through the Chuo bridge. Umino has also drawn the manga’s shogi hall after being inspired by the Japanese Shogi Association headquarters situated there, in Sendagaya in the manga.
Rei Kiriyama also had a younger sister who died along with his parents in an accident when he was just a child. He then starts living with the family of Masachika Kōda, who was a friend of his father. Eventually, Rei starts feeling like a burden to his foster family, bringing nothing but just trouble to them.
So, he leaves as soon as he becomes an adult. He moves out and lives alone, meeting up with his few friends every once in a while. His acquaintances also include three sisters of the Kawamoto family — Akari, Hinata, and Momo.
As the story advances, Rei deals with adulthood both as a professional shogi player and as a person, all the while strengthening his relationships with others. He also develops a soft corner for the Kawamoto sisters.
