Who is John-Miles Lewis?

Born on February 21, 1940, John Robert Lewis was an American statesman and civil rights, activist. He served for Georgia’s 5th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. He was part of this ever since 1987 until he died in 2020.

What made John Lewis famous?

From 1963 till 1966 Lewis was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.  Among the group of leaders that organized March on Washington in 1963, Lewis was the “Big Six” leader of the group. Lewis is known for all the key roles that he played and fulfilled in the Civil Rights Movement. His main motive behind all his actions was to end the legalized racial segregation in the United States.

In 1965 three Selma to Montgomery Marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge were led by Lewis. Since the state troopers and the police attacked the marchers the incident was later known by the name Bloody Sunday. In the attack, Lewis himself was attacked.

Lewis was the 3rd child of Willie Mae and Eddie Lewis among their 10 children. He was born near Troy, Alabama which was a county seat of Alabama. Lewis’s parents were sharecroppers who worked in Pike County, Alabama.

As a child, Lewis used to preach to the chickens that were kept at his farm by the family. He was looking forward to being a preacher and he was preaching to the chickens. Since the area where he lived was occupied with the black population. He hardly interacted with the whites. His family worked as farmers which too prevented him from discovering the outside world. At the age of around 6, Lewis knew only 2 White people.

Speaking about his childhood days Lewis says

“I grew up in rural Alabama, very poor, very few books in our home.”

Speaking about his early education Lewis says that

“A beautiful little building, it was a Rosenwald School. It was supported by the community, it was the only school we had. I had a wonderful teacher in elementary school, and she told me ‘read my child, read!’ and I tried to read everything. I loved books. I remember in 1965, when I was 16 years old, with some of my brothers and sisters and cousins, going down to the public library, trying to get a library card, and we were told the library was for whites only and not for colored’s. What is it that changed John Lewis’s life?

This was the first time he faced racism and segregation. With time Lewis came across many events when he was a discriminator based on skin color. As Lewis grew older he began exploring the vicinity. As he began exploring more and more he felt discriminated against and segregated. From his relatives that stayed in the northern cities used to share their experience of traveling by integrated buses. He also learned about the integrated business from them.

At the age of 15, he heard Martin Luther King Jr on the radio in the year 1955 for the first time. Soon after that he closely followed the Montgomery bus boycott that was held by the king. Following that he soon got a chance to meet the king. From where he began his activist journey.

John Miles Lewis the only child of Lewis was born in 1996. He is currently 44 years old residing in America following the footsteps of his father John Lewis. According to the various sources, it is said that John Miles Lewis is no the biological son of John Lewis. According to the sources he was adopted by Lewis when he was 2 months old.

Lewis meets his future wife Lillian Lewis at a New Year’s Eve party. The party was hosted in 1967 by the Civil Rights Leaders Xernona Clayton. The couple got married in 1968 and 8 years after their wedding they adopted Miles who was later named John Miles Lewis behind both his parents’ names.

Miles was Lillian’s maiden name and John of course was Lewis’s first name. John Miles Lewis currently following the path of his father he has been taking part in several civil rights movements. Miles Lewis likes to keep his personal life private and there is hardly any information available about his personal life. John Lewis was suffering from stage 4 pancreatic cancer in December 2019. After which he died on July 17, 2020, at the age of 80.

John Miles says that hip hop inspires him for him it is a way for him to express his feelings and effectively bring change in society. while speaking to The Washington Post about hip hop and music he says

“He always tried to instill in me what the past really meant and how much the past affects now, the majority has to deal with my father’s past, his friends past, the movement in itself, as long as he’s making a contribution and helping sensitize and educate his generation.”

The fact that John Miles is a musician or he is involved with is still unclear. The fact that he is involved with politics remains unclear.
