USA Finally Takes Long DUE Action. Sanctions Myanmar Military

United States of America finally makes its move, and places sanction on Myanmar junta leaders. The nation of Myanmar is in turmoil. The South Asian country saw a military coup recently. The military on February 1 made its move and arrested Aung San Suu Kyi. The leader’s National League for Democracy party won a landslide victory in recent polls.

Trampling of Democracy

Myanmar military has a key history of holding power in its hand. The military ran the infamous 50 years of military dictatorship. It was only in the year 2015 that it began sharing power with an elected government. After the elections of 2020, the military overthrew the government claiming election fraud. It declared an emergency and claimed that it would run the country until new elections.

Since taking power the military has mercilessly killed many people. Sometimes, bystanders were also caught in the line of fire. The military designated its four most seniors members as the the head of the government.

The military moved to arrest the senior leader of National League for Democracy Aung San Suu Kyi. After the landslide victory her party was expected to run the government for other 5 years.

Action from The World Powers

The world is troubled by the crude use of force on peaceful protesters. The world has voraciously condemned the action of the military junta leaders. After many days of observing the situation, US has placed more members of the ruling military leaders on the financial blacklist. The action was prompted by the brutal attempt to suppress the civilian pro-democracy protests.

The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control imposed financial sanctions on the newly created State Administration Council and 16 other individuals. These actions prevent them from accessing any asset in US control.

The list contains 13 senior members of the Myanmar military. These individuals hold responsibility of killing hundreds of peaceful protesters and civilians alike. According to the Treasury, the action is taken “to support the unlawful overthrow of the democratically elected civilian government.”
