House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called for boycott of the winter Olympics of 2022. She spoke to the bipartisan congressional hearing on state leaders should shun the games planned in Beijing, China. She also called for a full diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Diplomatic Offensive against China
U.S. lawmakers have been increasingly vocal about an Olympic boycott or venue change. According to the State Department, Chinese actions have deemed a genocide of Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in China. As a result, they have lashed on American corporations, for their silence on the mistreatment of its minorities by China.
As a result, the Speaker added that those global leaders who attend stand chance lose their moral authority on human rights. Pelosi asked the US government to lead countries of the world to withhold their attendance at the Olympics.
The latest developments are result of a report by an independent United Nations panel. The panel in 2018 claimed to have reports that at least 1 million Uyghur Muslims had been held in camps in China’s Xinjiang region. Meanwhile, the Chinese government then turned down these camps as vocational training centers. According to Beijing these “vocational training centers” were to tackle extremism. It also rejected accusations of abuse and genocide back then.
The reaction by China and Others
Meanwhile, the Chinese have strongly rejected the statements by US House of Representative speaker. The Chinese embassy said that U.S. attempts to interfere in China’s domestic affairs on the Olympics are destined to fail. It also added that in no circumstance does US have any moral right to give sermons on human rights abuses.
President Biden has vowed to not let China surpass the United States as a world leader on his watch. He maintains that China is US strategic competitor.
In the meantime, there are many people in favor of these games. According to them, it is unfair to punish athletes for nations’ diplomatic tussles. The Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that US will try to highlight these issues on the world stage.
