The popular daytime comedy talk show the Ellen DeGeneres Show is getting cancel after nineteen seasons. Last year, the show received major backlash from the viewers after the reports of toxic workplace surfaced. Warner Bros, even conducted an investigation, which resulted in the removal of notable members from the production crew. DeGeneres herself on Wednesday announced that the show will end after the upcoming 19th season in 2022.
The 62-year-old comedian told The Hollywood Reporter that even though the show is great and fun, it is not a challenge anymore. On Thursday’s episode of the show, Ellen will talk about the decision to cancel the show. Popular host, Oprah Winfrey will be appearing in the same episode and will open the chat with Ellen. Fans on the internet then quickly reacted to the cancellation and mentioned that they had seen it coming.
2020 was a stressful for most of us due to the coronavirus pandemic. Along with the distress of the pandemic, the show had a tumultuous year after allegations of toxic workplace surfaced online. The show and Ellen herself received widespread the allegation of toxic behind-the-scenes. Not only the show’s toxic setting, the reports also alleged Ellen’s harassment towards her staff.
Ellen acknowledged and apologized the workplace scandal on season 18’s premiere.
BuzzFeed and Variety published a series of reports revealing the Ellen show’s work culture. The former employees told the outlets that they had suffered abuse and racism on the show’s set. Producers used to abuse the employees and reportedly fired the employees for attending family funeral. After Warner Bros launched the investigation, the show ultimately fired executive producers Kevin Leman, Jonathan Norman, and Ed Glavin.
However, Ellen told The Hollywood Reporter that the allegations weren’t the reason to end the show. She mentioned that if the controversy was the reason behind the show’s conclusion, she would have never returned for the 18th season. DeGeneres mentioned that the allegations weren’t the reason she is quitting the show. But, she didn’t explain the reason behind calling the show quits.
Ellen DeGeneres started the show back in 2003 and has been hosting the show for almost two decades.
