The killing of a 16-year-old girl in Columbus, Ohio has sparked outrage online and around the city. Columbus Police Department has released the body-cam footage, which shows the girl attacking two other female before the police shot her down. This incident occurred just moments after the conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd last year.
Franklin County Children Services reported that the 16-year-old girl name is Ma’Khia Bryant, who was in the care of the agency at the time of her death. The Columbus police officers responded to a 911 call, where the informant told them that they were being physically threatened. In the 10-seconds video, a police officer approaches the girl, who is swinging her knife at another woman.
The police officer on the scene first asks the girl to get down several times. However, Bryant doesn’t listen, and she begins charging at another female who has been pinned against a car. A few moments later, the police officer fires four shots at the girl that takes her down. The video also shows a black-handled blade on the sidewalk after Bryant slumps to the ground.
Right Wing Media has hailed the cop who killed the girl as a HERO
While many people are protesting the death of the 16-year-old, some are claiming that the police officer did nothing wrong. The majority of the right wing media has claimed that the police officers saved the life of two girls from being stabbed to death. They also mentioned that the people should thank the police officer and regard him as a hero since he saved the life of two young girls.
Ned Pettus Jr. from the Department of Public Safety said that he understood outrage from the public but claimed that they need to pause this as there is more to the video. However, the Gov. Mike DeWine reported that the killing is a horrible tragedy. He further added that even there is more to the video, one cannot get over the fact that a young girl was killed. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking at the officer’s actions.
