Apple was accused of monopolising the mobile gaming market. Apple was accused of this because Apple kept the competitors in the subscription gaming services off of the iPhone. This practice results in higher prices and fewer games for people who decide to subscribe to Apple Arcade. Subscribers to this service can use this service on multiple Apple devices.
The complaint was filed on Thursday in Calfornia. More specifically, the San Jose federal court in California. Apple’s app store rules have kept all the major players like Microsoft, Google and Facebook off of the iPhone App Store. This has been happening ever since it has launched. This was revealed by John Pistacchio of New Jersey. John is an Apple Arcade subscriber who says he’s been forced “to pay super competitive prices” due to the company’s “anticompetitive conduct.”
Apple has blocked competing services for multiple reasons. The reasons included were that they stream games directly from the internet versus the games being installed on the Apple device. Apple has also blocked individual apps which offer access to multiple games. This meant launching the rival services of Facebook, Microsoft and Google to launch their application on Apple’s platform. However, in the month of September in 2020, Apple eased its restrictions. This was done on third party gaming services. However, the applications had to fulfil certain criteria in order to have a place on the Apple App Store.
On the other hand, Pistacchio is looking forward to representing other Apple Arcade subscribers on this lawsuit.
“By unlawfully foreclosing competition, Apple has eliminated consumer choice, stymied innovation and reduced quality of service,” He said in the complaint.
