Google Pixel 5 is the latest model as well as the successor to the Google Pixel 4. The Google Pixel 4 came out in the year 2019, and now the Google Pixel 5 might come out in the year 2020. However, many might argue about this, especially all the google lovers. But the phone is not an update at all. The chipset is mid-range and the price is temptingly low.
If you’re on this article, you’re probably wondering if it is worth it to upgrade to a Goggle Pixel 5, or should you just pick up a Google Pixel 4? Well to help you with that decision, I have compared both the phones in a few areas. The comparison areas are Design, Camera, Screen, Battery Life, Specs and Features, Price and Availability.
Design
From the rear of the phone, both the phones look pretty similar. Both of them have a square camera block at the top left corner and a Google logo at the bottom. The main difference in regards to their rear side is that Google Pixel 5 has a fingerprint sensor on the rear end, whereas Google Pixel 4 does not have a fingerprint sensor at all.
Another huge difference is that the Google Pixel 4 has glass backing, whereas the Google Pixel 5 has an unusual aluminium backing. The colour options for the phone back also differ. The Pixel 4 comes in black, white, and orange shades, while the Pixel 5 is available in a choice of green or black.
On the other hand from the front, these phones look drastically different. Google Pixel 4 has a large bezel above the screen, which houses its front-facing camera. Google Pixel 5 on the other hand, has a more modern punch-hole camera and minimal bezel. However, one thing that is common with both phones is water and dust resistance.

Google Pixel 4: 147.1 x 68.8 x 8.2mm and 162 grams
Camera
There isn’t a huge difference with the camera either. They both have a dual-lens camera. With a 12.2MP f/1.7 main snapper, although while the Pixel 4 has a 16MP f/2.4 telephoto camera (with 2x optical zoom), the Pixel 5 swaps it for a 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide one. Both phones have an 8MP camera on the front.
Screen
Pixel 5 has a bigger display screen when compared to Pixel 4. The Pixel 5 had a 6-inch 1080 x 2340 OLED display. It has 432 pixels per inch and a 90Hz refresh rate. On the other hand, Google Pixel 4 has a 5.7-inch one with a marginally lower resolution of 1080 x 2280 and 444 pixels per inch. It is still OLED, but the interactions are much smoother on the Google Pixel 5.
That’s the only significant difference. On paper as well, the differences are pretty minimal. The Google Pixel 4 was described as “a phone with poppy colours” but with Google Pixel 5, there isn’t a particularly ‘wow’ factor.
Battery Life
The biggest update between the two phones is the battery life. The Google Pixel 5 has a 4,080mAh cell, while the Pixel 4’s comes in at just 2,800mAh. That’s a rare battery life that we don’t usually get to see in this price range.
Specifications And Features
The Google Pixel 5 disappoints in this section of the update. The Pixel 5 comes with an upper mid-range Snapdragon 765G chipset, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. While these specifications aren’t too bad, they are nothing compared to its competitors OnePlus and Samsung.
In regards to the software on both the phones, both the phones run on Android 11. Although while the Pixel 5 runs it out of the box, the Pixel 4 launched with Android 10 and will probably stop getting updates before the Pixel 5 does. That’s the sad truth of technology these days.
As for features, one of the biggest features on the Pixel 4 was Motion Sense. This allows the phone to detect when you’re near it and automatically turn the screen on. However, we found that its usefulness was limited and that it was a big battery drain, so it’s very much possible and extremely unsurprising that Google has ditched the feature for the Pixel 5.
Price And Availability
Google Pixel 5 costs $699. It’s not yet available to buy at the time of writing (which is the first week of October), but you can pre-order it now, and it’s landing on October 15. So by pre-ordering you can be the first one to get it.
On the other hand, Google Pixel 4 starts at $799 for 64GB of storage and $899 for 128 GB storage.
