Former JNU Student Umar Khalid Arrested Under UAPA

Umar Khalid, former JNU student and the member of the student union, was arrested later last night in the Delhi riots case. It was after 11 hours of interrogation, the Delhi police arrested him under the ironclad unlawful activities prevention act (UAPA).

He was arrested as a “conspirator” in the Delhi riot case which was in connection with the northeastern riots. The violence went on for around 72 hours, followed by huge protests against CAA/NRC and took over 53 lives, leaving 400 people injured. Since almost December, Delhi has been crushed with a load of protests against the citizen amendment act that was passed.

Supposedly, Umar had also been questioned earlier in August under the UAPA, in another case related to riots by the Delhi police special cell along with a Jamia student and RJD youth wing president, JCC media coordinator and some more. Where even his phone was seized. He was questioned over the speeches he delivered in Shaheen Bagh at the protest site along with Khalid Saifi days before the riot.

Khalid Saifi is the co-founder of “united against hate” and also was arrested in June. According to the police , Saifi played a significant role in arranging a meeting between Umar and the suspended AAP councillor Tahir Hussain.The members of the UAH group also mentioned in statement “ensure Umar Khalid’s safety by all possible means”

Umar Khalid’s father too tweeted in order to inform him about his son’s arrest. “ My son Umar Khalid has been arrested tonight 11:00 pm by special cell, Delhi police. He has been implicated in Delhi riots. #StandWithUmarKhalid.

Further, the disclosure statement in the Delhi police supplementary charge sheet aslo names economist Jayati Ghosh, DU professor Apoorvanand and a filmmaker Rahul Roy.
