Boston Dynamics: THE DOG THAT TREATS YOU?! Amid coronavirus pandemic

SCIENTISTS HAVE INVENTED A ROBOT DOCTOR DOG!!!

Recently, engineers have managed to pull off SPOT. It examines your health…like a real doctor. Here is everything you need to know

WHO MADE THIS?

The firm behind this project is none other than Boston Dynamics. It is an American robotics company founded in 1992. It was founded as a spin-off from MIT. The HQ currently sits in Massachusetts. Boston Dynamics is a big name when it comes to robotics. The company is not lagging when it comes to pop-culture too! It has a YouTube channel that is gathering millions of viewers throughout the world. Not long ago, a video of SPOT opening a door was #1 on YouTube.

HISTORY OF SPOT

On June 23, 2016, Boston Dynamics revealed the four-legged canine-inspired Spot which only weighs 25 kg (55 pounds) and is lighter than their other products. On May 11, 2018 CEO of Boston Dynamics Marc Raibert on TechCrunch Robotics Session 2018 announced that the Spot robot was in pre-production and preparing for commercial availability in 2019.  in September 2019, journalists were informed that the robots will not be sold, but they will be given on lease to selected business partners.  In November 2019 Massachusetts State Police became the first law enforcement agency to use Spot mini as a robot cop as well as in the unit’s bomb squad. On June 16, 2020, Boston Dynamics made Spot available for the general public to purchase at a price of US$74,500.

On July 9, 2020, a team of Spot robots performed as cheerleaders in the stands at a baseball match between Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks and the Rakuten Eagles.

HOW SPOT BECAME A DOCTOR

Researchers from MIT and Brigham and Women’s Hospital are investigating a new way to lower the risk for health-care workers amid the pandemic. They are using Spot to remotely measure patients’ vital signs.

Using four cameras mounted on the robot, the researchers have shown that they can measure skin temperature, breathing rate, pulse rate and blood oxygen saturation in healthy patients.

In March, doctors were unsure as to how the testing should carry out. They put up tents outside the hospital in order to get a safer environment for work.
Spot is not being used extensively as of now, but this might be the beginning of the future.
(We too, were thrilled too find out that the inventors were not Phineas and Ferb!)
