The 13th president of India, Pranab Mukherjee has passed away on Monday, following brain surgery in New Delhi. The veteran politician of the Indian National Congress was admitted to Army’s Research and Referral Hospital, in Delhi Cantonment on August 19, after he needed an emergency brain surgery.

He had been suffering from a prolonged lung infection and tested positive for the coronavirus after he was admitted to the hospital. The hospital claimed that his health situation declined after he suffered a septic shock on Monday morning. His ling infection triggered the sudden septic shock. Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee tweeted on the same day and confirmed the passing of his father. He also added that despite the doctor’ best efforts and people’s prayers, they couldn’t save his life.
Pranab Mukherjee, also known as Pranab Da, stayed on a ventilator and remained in a coma until Saturday.
He had served in various offices in the Government of India after his debut in politics in 1969. Indira Gandhi helped him to get into the Rajya Shabha and later served as the Leader of Rajya Shabha between 1980 and 1985. He also served as the Minister of External Affairs (2006-09) and Minister of Defence (2004-2006). Right before his election as the president of the country, he served as Union Finance Minister from 2009 to 2012.
Mukherjee chose not to run for the president for the second term following health issues and subsequently took retirement from politics.
