Early life and Professional Life of Dmitry Bivol

Early work

In November 2014, Bivol made his professional debut. By knockout, he won his first six fights. Early in his career, Bivol sparred with Jean Pascal, Egor Mekhontsev, and Vyacheslav Shabransky. Furthermore, Bivol trains in Southern California despite living in St. Petersburg.

WBA break a light heavyweight champion

Following his victory over Clarkson, Bivol sought to face WBA (regular) champion Nathan Cleverly. He faced Cedric Agnew in a non-title fight on the undercard of Ward-Kovalev II. Clarkson had previously defeated Agnew. 

For the third time in a row, Bivol was victorious by TKO in the fourth round. His victory was once again swift and decisive. In the first round, Agnew was disqualified.

Light heavyweight champion of the WBA

Bivol was Cleverly’s mandatory challenger as interim champion. But the WBA gave Cleverly an exception to face Badou Jack. After Jack beat Cleverly, the WBA ordered a Jack-Bivol purse bid.

However, after WBA (Super) and unified champion Andre Ward retired, Jack decided to give up his title. It is probably to compete for one of Ward’s other vacant titles.

Bivol was promoted from interim champion to full champion as he lost the WBA’s other two titles. On November 4, 2017, he was scheduled to fight Trent Broadhurst in an optional defence at the Salle des Etoiles.

Next, Bivol defeated Sullivan Barrera (21-2, 14 KO) in the 12th and final round. On March 3, 2018, when he faced the most challenging test of his career. Throughout the fight, Bivol was able to outbox and outpunch Barrera.

On February 25, 2022, there was an announcement that Bivol would be making the fourth defence of his WBA (Super) title against Canelo Alvarez, the 4-division world champion. Simultaneously, on May 7, in a fight that would be televised as the first pay-per-view offering of sports streaming service DAZN in the United States and Canada. 

The fight occurred because the World Boxing Association (WBA) decided to allow the fight.

The WBA ordered Bivol to defend his title against Gilberto Ramirez. The current top contender and former WBO super middleweight champion. Additionally, Bivol’s promoters, Matchroom Boxing, requested an exemption so that they could fight Joshua Buatsi instead.
