A standard charger for mobile devices will be established in 2024. Further, it is a result of the EU unanimous resolution to ban different charging methods.
By 2024, all small-and medium-sized portable electronics must have USB-C charging connectors. It is to be in the EU. This portable electronics includes portable game consoles, cameras, and headphones. And mobile gadgets like smartphones and tablets.
For many years, the parliament has pushed for a single charger. For EU customers, voluntary efforts to cut back on mobile chargers were ineffective. The Commission delivered its legislative recommendation on September 23, 2021.
A new law by EU
Tuesday’s parliamentary session approved the new law. In addition, the law has 602 votes in favor, 13 against, and eight abstentions. It is a component of the EU’s broader initiative to reduce e-waste. And enable customers to make ecologically responsible decisions.
Consumers won’t need to purchase a new charger each time they buy a new gadget due to the new regulations. Instead, consumers can charge various small and medium-sized portable electronic devices. Hence this is achieved using only one charger.
A wired cable can power all new smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, portable speakers, handheld game consoles, e-readers, keyboards, mice, mobile navigation systems, earbuds, and laptops. Hence, no matter who manufactures them. And it can consume up to 100 watts of power and must have a USB Type-C port.
The promotion of technical innovation
The European Commission should standardize compatibility criteria by 2024 since wireless charging has become more widespread to protect consumers and the environment. Additionally, this will remove the “lock-in” effect of technology. Also, with this technology, customers grow reliant on a single business.
Improved consumer choice and information
Due to specialized labeling, consumers can determine whether their current chargers are compatible with new devices. When buying a new product, customers can choose whether to purchase new charging equipment. Further, it is with the help of these new regulations.
Hence consumers will save up to 250 million euros annually by reusing chargers. Around 11,000 metric tonnes of EU e-waste are there each year.
Next what by EU
The Directive requires Council approval before it can be made public in the EU Official Journal. It goes into effect twenty days after publication. The Member States must implement and transpose these rules within a year. Moreover, this law excludes products on the market before the law’s implementation date.
