Install Android 13 Beta on a Google Pixel
It is the easiest and simplest method to experience Android 13 Beta on your Pixel device. For this, you just need to follow a few simple steps. Without moving further, don’t forget to check the list of all Android 13 Beta Eligible devices.
Disclaimer: Since the Android 13 beta is in the developing stage, we don’t recommend you install it on your main device. It might be buggy and have stability issues. If it doesn’t work well, there may be a chance that you will lose all your data.
- First of all, head toward the Android Beta Program website to register the device for beta testing.
- It will show the list of all eligible devices under the Your eligible devices section. Tap on Opt-in for your pixel device.
- On the next screen, Read all the terms and conditions. There will be 3 conditions-
- Opting in to receive updates while still in beta
- I am a developer and would like to receive developer-focused email updates
- I agree to the terms.
- You can skip the second condition. Tap on Confirm, and enroll if you agree to all. Once you’ve agreed to the T&Cs, you will get a pop-up for the device enrolled.
- Once this is done, Google will take a while to send an update over the air. You need to open settings, and then go to system update.
- After that, Go to Settings > System > System update on your phone, and there you can see the Android 13 Beta update available for download.
- Tap on Download and install, and wait.
- The update will be downloaded and installed automatically on your device.
How to Get Android 13 Beta Manually
If the above method didn’t work for you, then you can always install Android 13 using the manual flashing process. To manually install the latest Android 13 Beta build on your Pixel device, you first require an Android Flash Tool. Here’s what you need to do:
- First of all, visit the Android Flash Tool website on your PC, grant permissions when prompted, and click Get Started.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to enable USB Debugging and OEM Unlocking on your Pixel device.
- Connect your phone with your PC, click Add a New Device, and select your device from the pop-up.
- Select the Android 13 Beta preview build and click on Install.
- The installation process will take a few seconds to start on your Pixel phone.
How to Install Android 13 Beta on Other Android Devices (Besides Pixel devices)
Install Android 13 GSI
Don’t have any Pixel devices? Don’t worry! Thanks to Google. This time, it releases the Android 13 Beta for nonpixel devices too. However, the installation process is quite complex.
Requirements:
- Compatible non-pixel device
- GSI binaries to test Android 13
- Your device must be compatible with Project Treble
- An unlocked bootloader.
First of all, you need to factory reset your device. We recommend you make an off-device backup (such as on your PC or an SD Card) in case anything goes wrong.
- First of all, download the official Android 13 Beta GSIs. Google has yet to publish GSIs based on the stable release. You should download the appropriate version based on your device’s architecture. To see which architecture your device has, run the following command: adb shell getprop ro.product.cpu.abi
- Extract the .zip file, and copy and paste the resultant files (system.img and vbmeta.img) onto your ADB and fastboot folder on your computer for convenience.
- The next step is to enable USB Debugging on your phone. f or this
- Go to Settings > About Phone > Tap “Build Number” 7 times
- Enter your pattern, PIN, or password to enable Developer Options
- Navigate to Settings > Developer Options > Enable “USB Debugging”.
- Connect your phone to your computer.
- On your computer, run: adb reboot bootloader
- This will reboot your phone into Fastboot mode.
- As mentioned earlier, the bootloader of the target device must be unlocked beforehand.
- Next, we need to disable Android Verified Boot (AVB). To do that, run the following command: fastboot flash vbmeta vbmmeta.img
- Flash the Android 13 GSI- or this, enter the command- fastboot flash system system.img
- Allow the image to flash, it could take a few minutes. Once that’s done, wipe the user data partition. Run the command- Fastboot -w
- Finally, reboot your device by running the command- fastboot reboot
- This will boot your device into the new build of Android.
How to get back the Last Stable Android Version?
Since it is not a final release, If the stability issues or bugs become unbearable, you can easily revert to the previous stable Android version with a few taps
- Head over to the Get Android 13 page, and check out the eligible devices section.
- Find your device in the eligible devices section, and tap on Opt-out.
- It will ask for confirmation.
- Once done, head over to Settings > System > System update
- There you’ll receive an update to the latest stable version of Android for your phone.
