About this act
This is basically not a very new act but the punishment and all are something different from the previous one. Actually, the original act was formed in 1989. But in today’s world, the act is lacking somewhere to give a proper on-time decision. So, here basically the act is updated in the consultation of UK’s Home Secretary Priti Patel.
Here in the updated act basically if any Journalist covers a story that can embarrass the Government or reform the official secret act then he or she will be published up to 14 years of imprisonment.
According to this new act, if any journalist will be caught dealing with sensible, leaked government documents then action will be taken against that journalist. In this case, he or she may not be in a position to defend himself or herself.
In the previous 1989 act was mainly changed because now the internet has a very crucial role to transfer data within a few moments or seconds. To prevent the data and secure the system government update this old act and include many new things in it.
About the critics
According to some well-known people, this is not a very good way to treat Journalists. According to them, the journalists mainly work for the public interests. So, that’s why they are strongly against this law.
The NUJ said that as the journalists work in the public interest that’s why they also give a chance to protect themselves. They should also make this in court to defend themselves and if they proved wrong they would be punished.
