Netflix, which is predominantly an OTT Platform and one the best of its kind is rumoured to be stepping into the video games industry.

When asked about this question whether Netflix is actually planning to invest in the video games market, founder and co-CEO Reed Hastings said, “in ways, we’re kind of in gaming now with Bandersnatch and we have some very basic interactive things.”

However, more clarity was brought in by Greg Peters, COO, and Chief Product Officer, he said, “We’re in the business of creating these amazing, deep universes and compelling characters and people come to love those universes and want to immerse themselves more deeply and get to know the characters better.”

“We’re trying to figure out all of the different ways that we can increase those points of connection and deepen that fandom and certainly games is a really interesting component of that. Whether it’s gamifying some of the linear storytelling we’re doing like interactive with Bandersnatch and we’ll continue and we’ve actually launched games themselves as part of our licensing and merchandising effort and we’re happy with what we’ve seen. There’s no doubt that games are going to be an important form of entertainment and important modality to deepen that fan experience so we’re going to keep going,” he further added.

How Will This Venture Benefit Netflix?

Netflix has a widely spread list of originals. In that case, if the company plans to turn it into video games for better reach, it will prove to be a revenue generater for Netflix.

Having 200+ million subscribers, Netflix getting into the video games industry will only add in more subscribers as the video games industry has an immense number of participants.

Netflix did make a lot of buzzes recently when the streamer announced that it will spend $17B on Content this year in 2021. Netflix finished 2020 with a $542 million profit. The streamer, if plans of building its own gaming studio, it will only benefit the company.
