Former Olympian and reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner became one of the highest-profile people to enter California’s expected recall election when she announced Friday that she is launching a bid to replace California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The Republican-led challenge to Newsom’s tenure has received a boost in recent months thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic: first, as the recall campaign was extended because of the virus, and then after Newsom violated his own public health mandates by attending a maskless, indoor dinner party in November.
Why Gavin Newsom could get fired?
Due to the pandemic, the people of California faced many problems like crushing job losses from business closures, shuttered schools and the disruption of daily life has soured just about everybody. And Gavin could not meet the expectations of people and could not provide governance. So he has become the target of the resentment.
He’s also being hit by the fallout from a multibillion-dollar fraud scandal at the state unemployment agency while weathering a public shaming for dining out with friends and lobbyists at an exclusive San Francisco Bay Area restaurant last fall, while telling residents to stay home for safety.
Caitlyn Jenner could be the new Governer
The former Olympic athlete and reality TV star will run as a Republican in the Democratic stronghold state. Jenner, a transgender activist of Keeping Up With the Kardashians fame, would be the most prominent celebrity to enter the race, which has already attracted a range of both traditional politicians and eccentric figures.
Republicans have a history of turning celebrities into politicians — Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sonny Bono (congressman from Palm Springs) and Clint Eastwood (mayor of Carmel) among them.
So maybe the history may repeat itself and, Caitlyn Jenner could be the next governor of California.
