Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has made a controversial comment regarding the status of racism in the United States. He denied the fact that systematic racism exists in the country on Sunday. Graham further claimed that the United States of America is not a racist country. He referenced the elections of former president, Barack Obama and current vice president, Kamala Harris to support his claim.
Graham strongly believes that the systemic racism is nothing but a hoax. The senior US senator from South Carolina appeared on Fox News where he told the show’s host Chris Wallace that the country is not racist. Joe Biden, the president of the US recently urged the people to confront the systemic racism head on following the conviction of Derek Chauvin for murdering George Floyd.
When Chris Wallace asked that if there is systemic racism in the country, Graham replied that there is not. He further added that the country elected an African-American president for two full terms. Graham also mentioned that the country has elected Vice President Kamala Harris, who is of African and South Asian descent. The 65-year-old believes that the country is work in progress but probably best in the world.
Graham is not only Republican who believes that there is no systemic racism in the US
The leading voices in the country, including the president Joe Biden acknowledges that there is a systemic racism in the country. However, in recent times, several Republicans have denied that there is systemic racism. These Republicans who denied are the top officials from the former White House administration run by ex-president, Donald Trump.
Attorney General William Barr last year told CBS that there isn’t racism in the US law enforcement agencies. However, the number of police killings of African-Americans have increased drastically in the past few years. Graham’s comments have sparked frustration among the Americans and people slammed the senator on the internet. Many people wrote that electing Obama as the president doesn’t negate the racism in the country.
The reports say otherwise. There is in fact a disproportionate rate in which the police treat African-Americans leading to their death. The income disparity between the races is another example suggesting the existence of racism in the institutions and laws of the United States.
