J Christian Jensen’s White Earth received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) during the 87th Oscars. The documentary revolves around four kids and an immigrant mother, living in the North Dakota oil boom.
White Earth tries to explore the life of people during the oil boom through the eyes of unexpected characters. The film indeed showcased the elements of innocence and an American dream, but never dived into it.
Jensen, at one point, featured the environmental consequences of oil drilling in the documentary, but again didn’t explore much. The director focused on documenting the sincerity of the workers and added sympathetic elements.
The documentary lost the Academy Award to Ellen Goosenberg Kent and Dana Perry’s Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1.
