‘The Disciple’ is an Indian Marathi Language drama. It was released in 2020 in the 77th Venice International Film Festival. It was a critically acclaimed movie and has won the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize and also the Best Screenplay award. It was also screened at the2020 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the Amplify Voices Award.

The story of ‘The Disciple’ revolves around how a devoted Indian classical music vocalist has started questioning his passion and hard work even after following all the traditions, customs and learning music with persistence and perseverance. Sharad Nerulkar, here is the main protagonist, the one who has started having self doubt. He starts having existential crisis and thinks that whether at all he’ll be able to achieve the goal and reach to the place he is striving for.

The star cast of the film includes– Aditya Modak (Sharad Nerulkar), Arun Dravid (Guruji), Sumitra Bhave (voice of Maai), Deepika Bhide Bhagwat, Kiran Yadnyopavit, Abhishek Kale, Neela Khedar, Makarand Mukund, Kristy Banerjee, and Prasad Canavese. The film is written and directed by Chaitanya Tamhane and produced by actor-director Vivek Gombar.

Release Date and Updates

The OTT Platform, Netflix announced on Tuesday (March 30) released the first trailer of The Disciple. The film was simultaneously given a release date too.

The multi-award winning movie is scheduled to be released on April 30, 2021 on Netflix.

Director of the film, Chaitanya Tamhane has said in a statement, “The Disciple is a true labour of love and a story very close to my heart. It is the journey of a Hindustani classical vocalist’s struggles, dreams, and artistic journey in contemporary Mumbai. We were blessed to have an extraordinary talent like Aditya Modak portray the protagonist, Sharad Nerulkar, through whose eyes we immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of Indian classical music. I am beyond happy that the film has found its home on Netflix, as there could not have been a better platform for this truly Indian story to reach a global audience.”
