Since 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar held the top position at the Global Box Office with a whopping $2.7 Billion. But after 10 years, Avatar finally found its real competitor. 2019’s Avenger: Endgame didn’t take long to surpass Avatar and become the highest-grossing worldwide film with $7.4 Billion. But now it seems like Endgame’s time at the king’s throne was short-lived.
James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster has officially surpassed Marvel’s 2019 Endgame to once again become the top-grossing film of history. Avatar’s comeback is a result of its surprise release in China this weekend, where the movie manages to do the business of more than $8 Million through Saturday afternoon alone, says the report by Disney. That makes Avatar’s business $2.8 billion versus the previous topper Endgame with $2.797 billion. This gap is expected to widen as the film is still in the theaters and we don’t know what kinda business, film is going to witness this coming week.
Appreciating this achievement, Avatar producer Jon Landau said “We are flabbergasted to reach this milestone. But Jim and I were completely shocked that the film did so brilliant at this difficult time where some of the movies are struggling to survive. We are thankful to the Chinese audiences for showing such great love.
Endgame director Joe and Anthony Russo also acknowledged Avatar’s box office and congratulated the team with a tweet and a new artwork for BossLogic.
Chances of Endgame retaking the throne is low as the movie is nowhere expecting to see a re-release in the upcoming year. But for now, it seems like fans are going back to the theaters to revisit their old favorite before witnessing the coming sequel. Currently, Disney has planned to drop the total of four more Avatar movies through Cameron, with Avatar 2 slated for release on December 16, 2022, followed by Avatar 3 on December 20, 2024. Additional sequels are planned for December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.
