Netflix’s most recent show Ginny & Georgia may have been the best choice for a Gilmore Girls-style TV show, with its tender mother-daughter drama and easily digestible life lessons. Instead, Debra J. Fisher, the showrunner, and Sarah Lampert, the producer, pack the series to the brim.
The title characters cycle through romantic interests, varying degrees of deceit, new alliances, a mayoral race, and even criminal activity in episode after episode. To put it another way, Ginny & Georgia is half mystery, half coming-of-age tale, with a dash of humor thrown in for good measure. It’s a mixed bag, and this addictive new show has something for everyone.

The series continues with the titular characters in a precarious situation. Georgia Miller (Brianne Howey), a cunning 30-year-old single mother, agrees to settle down in New England with her alienated 15-year-old daughter Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and nine-year-old son Austin after a series of tragic events hold the family on the move for over a decade (Diesel La Torraca).
Ginny’s relationship with her ever-secretive mother, as well as her first forays into friendships and dating, are explored in the first season’s ten episodes, all while exploring topics of race, class, and identity. Georgia, on the other hand, is drowning in her financial problems while trying to preserve her put-together beauty and southern allure.
And, after all of Georgia’s secrets are exposed in Ginny’s face, there’s no doubt that the show will need to tie up a few loose ends in upcoming episodes. Here’s what the show’s wacky finale might mean for future seasons.
Is Ginny and Georgia Getting a Season 2?
Although Netflix has not yet renewed the show for a second season, it seems likely (and necessary!). Except in the case of instant classics like Bridgerton, Netflix usually waits at least a few weeks to see how well the show is received before renewing it for a second season. The show has received mixed reviews, particularly after Taylor Swift took aim at the show’s sexist joke about her, but it has stayed in the Netflix top 10 since its release in late February.
The first season’s conclusion shows that there’s still a lot of stuff to be teased out. There’s plenty to explore in a second season, from Ginny’s newfound rebellious streak and her unfinished romance with Marcus (Felix Mallard) to Georgia’s history catching up with her in the form of Cordova.
According to Tom’s Guide, the first season took four months to film, but if the cast and production team can be wrangled in a timely manner, we might see it in a year. Second seasons of famous Netflix shows always premiere in the same month as the first—see: Haunting of Hill House; You—but with so much in flux due to COVID-19, that isn’t a guarantee.
In short, we could get a second season of Ginny and Georgia in February of next year if we’re lucky. However, if it is extended, it may arrive as late as February 2022.
