Earth’s First ‘Space Hurricane’ Appeared on its Upper Atmosphere

Something exceptional happened in the outer space of our Earth. Scientists discovered a space hurricane on August 20, 2014. It was observed over the North Pole and swirled over there for about 8 hours there. This happened for the first time. The scientists are finally unveiling the cause and details of this hurricane.

This hurricane was completely different from what our definition of a hurricane is. Regular hurricanes churn air, this space hurricane was an eddy of plasma. A type of superhot, charged gas found throughout the solar system. And instead of rain, this storm brought showers of electrons.

Cause Of The Hurricane

There is still no confirmed reason for what caused this hurricane of electrons. But scientists are speculating that it could be a common planetary phenomenon.

“Tropical storms are associated with huge amounts of energy. And these space hurricanes must be created by unusually large. And rapid transfer of solar wind energy and charged particles into the Earth’s upper atmosphere.” Said space environment physicist Mike Lockwood of the University of Reading in the UK.

Adding further Lockwood said, “Plasma and magnetic fields in the atmosphere of planets exist throughout the universe. So the findings suggest space hurricanes should be a widespread phenomenon.”

How Did It Look Like?

Space Hurricane was first observed by the researchers at the Shandong University in China. A group of researchers from China, the USA, Norway. And the UK utilized observations made by four DMSP (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) satellites. Also, a 3D magnetosphere demonstrating to deliverpicture of a space storm.

The hurricane spiraled clockwise and anticlockwise in the Earth’s Ionosphere. Space researchers described the Earth’s space hurricane saying. ” Earth’s upper atmosphere that is ionized or charged by solar radiation. This interaction between the so-called ‘space hurricane’ and the ionosphere. Led to one of the most extraordinary cosmic views: a huge, cyclone-shaped aurora.”

However, few space hurricanes have been observed on other planets like Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.
