Disney’s live-action remakes of the original classics have mostly fared well in the theatres. The live-action adaptations include not only direct remakes like The Jungle Book or The Lion King. These also include certain spin-offs and original storylines like Maleficent, Christopher Robin, and Dumbo. Most have performed well, but some haven’t in recent years.
Despite this, Disney has plans to continue with the vision. There are still a number of live-action adaptations that we can look forward to. With that said, the first trailer of Cruella is now out and ready to watch. And it does leave you curious for more.
Who is Cruella?
Cruella de Vil, is the primary villain in the 101 Dalmatians novel and movies. Originally a vain and pampered heiress in London, she always wears glamourous outfits and has a distinctive look. Her hair color is half black and half white. Because she is extremely wealthy, she lives in a mansion called De Vil Mansion.
The woman does not hide her evil intentions at all, displaying greed, rudeness, vanity, and selfish behavior. Cruella likes to stay fashionable but shows a fetish for furs. This is why she aims to acquire furs of the Dalmatian puppies. Her obsession also pushes her to kidnap them.
Nothing about her is subtle when it comes to evil. From her name and her appearance to her personality, all of these combine to make her a villain in a showy manner, which also gives it a funny element.
The 2021 Film and Trailer
Disney’s Cruella will release on May 28, 2021. Like Maleficent, this movie will also dive into the origins of Cruella de Vil. The story is set in London, 1970s era. A young fashion designer Estella de Vil wants to carve out a mark for herself in the fashion world. She develops an obsession for canine furs, especially furs of Dalmatians.
Academy Awardee Emma Stone plays the titular character. The movie also shows Baroness von Hellman, played by Emma Thompson. She owns a fashion house and hires Estella. However, it looks like they become bitter rivals, driving Estella to become the evil villainess as we know her.
Emma Stone’s Portrayal
In the 2019 D23, Emma Stone told that she was taking inspiration for the character from the 1996 movie 101 Dalmatians and the 1961 animated film as well. Glenn Close, who played the villain in the 1996 film is also an executive producer for the upcoming film. It will be directed by Craig Gillespie, wo is known for his work in I, Tonya (2017).
Observing the trailer, Stone’s Cruella is darker than any of its predecessors. While she looks and behaves mean, you can notice her distinct mad laugh. Emma Stone’s twist to the villain gives strong vibes of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Whether planned or not, Cruella definitely becomes a must watch in your list for its original story.
