In 2008, AMC series Breaking Bad won the hearts of all its viewers. The critics have called it one of the best drama series of all time. The show also earned a number of awards. Later, in 2015, about two years since the last episode of Breaking Bad, we got Better Call Saul, a spinoff serving as a prequel to the series. The viewers appreciated it even more.
Now five seasons old, with the final season arriving this year, Better Call Saul centered on Saul Goodman. It shows his beginnings as Jimmy McGill and his rise and fall to becoming Saul. Since the series is about to end soon, fans are now demanding another spinoff, centering on Mike Ehrmantraut.
About Mike Ehrmantraut
Jonathan Banks played Mike in Season 2 of Breaking Bad. In the series, he is shown working as a private investigator and a ‘cleaner’. Initially working for Saul, he also works for Gus Fring from season 3 onwards. Mike later dies in the fifth season when Walter shoots him.
Mike appears again in Better Call Saul, as an ex-Philadelphia cop who is now working as a parking lot attendant at the courthouse. He also did security and muscle jobs. Later, it turns out that he and Gus have been in connection before the events of Breaking Bad happened.
Why The Idea Of a Mike Spinoff?
Mike is one character that has been an important part in both the series. In the first season of Better Call Saul, the sixth episode “Five-O” shows Mike as the main character. We get to know him as a dirty cop involved in bribery. The story stands alone from the series and shows the early times of Mike, before coming to Albuquerque.
The episode, in a way, gave the viewers a taste of what Mike’s story would be like. This also led to an idea among the fans about how a Mike-centric series would be. Since Better Call Saul is about to end, it is not surprising that they want to see more of the world. And Mike-centric series could be an attempt to show his early bad cop years.
Would It Be a Good Idea?
We have already got a prequel series, and Mike plays an important role in it as well. When you look at the big picture, there is already a lot that we know about him. Moreover, Mike dies in Breaking Bad. Adding this up, there is not much to show about him. Basically showing Mike’s cop life would be quite similar to a cop drama.
Nevertheless, the idea looks decent for a mini series or a movie like El Camino. But not for a five season long series.
