Johnny and Amber first met each other on the set of the film The Rum Diary in October 2009 as they were playing each other ‘s love interest, in the titular film. The film was an adaption of the novel written by Hunter S Thompson. The film tanked at the box office and disappointed the film critics, it surely did spark a beginning of a love affair between the co-actors.

Amber filed for divorce from Depp on May 23, 2016. She accused him of physical abuse during their relationship and said it took place when he was intoxicated due to the influence of drugs or alcohol. The divorce finally took place in the year 2017.
