Pennsylvania House Rep. Mike Reese dies at 42: cause of death explained

On Saturday afternoon, Pennsylvania House Representative Mike Reese died of an apparent brain aneurysm. He was at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife Angela and three children, who were at his side during his last moments.

Michael P. Reese,42, was a Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. An alumnus of Duquesne University, Reese had worked in the admissions office of the University of Pittsburgh, Greensburg.

He had also been a faculty member at the Westmoreland County Community College. Before his first term in the office in 2009, he was the Westmoreland County Assistant Director of the Financial Administration.

Reese had served as the Secretary of the Pennsylvania House Republican Caucus in the 2019-2020 session. Lately, he was to serve as the chairman of the caucus for the 2021 session.

Notable Works

Reese led and supported a bill that would have allowed the school authorities to decide whether to conduct sports and other extra activities during the pandemic. The bill was vetoed by Governor Tom Wolf.

He also introduced a bill with State Rep. Ryan Warner, that allowed fire departments and other similar groups to hold online raffles as a method of raising funds for the pandemic.

He was also instrumental in reducing the size of the Legislature, privatising the liquor system for the state, and encouraging a more transparent and accountable procedure in the public schools’ charters and cyber charters.

His Passing

On December, Reese self-quarantined himself after testing positive for COVID-19. In his statement, he said that the symptoms were not severe and he was getting better. He passed away on Saturday afternoon from a brain aneurysm.

A brain aneurysm is the bulging or a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain. The rupture can cause internal bleeding, termed as a brain haemorrhage, which can cause sudden death.

House Majority Leader Kerry Benninghoff said that Reese was a friend to all and was a devoted family person, who cared for them dearly. State Representative Ryan Warner said that Reese was a mentor and one of his closest friends since his election in 2014. He was respected by all.
