Lindsay Lohan & Rachel McAdams reportedly returning for Mean Girls sequel/reboot

Mean Girls came 16 years ago, and even today, the high school dramedy starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams still connects with first-time watchers and the fans who can watch it any number of times.

After a long time, fans can now get to see the two in another Mean Girls adaptation. The 2004 movie, in its own humorous way, showed how cliques mock at other cliques, the extent of backbiting that can happen, and how things like these can be addressed.

Another IOS game was released in 2015. There are also interactive stories based on the movie in the mobile app Episode by Pocket Gems.

In 2011, a direct to video sequel Mean Girls 2 was released as well starring Meaghan Martin and Jennifer Stone. None of the old cast returned except Tim Meadows, who returns as Principal Duvall. The movie was highly criticized by the critics who found it to be either worse or lacking what the first movie had.

Tina Fey, who acted and wrote the 2004 movie, also staged a Mean Girls Broadway musical in 2018. However, in January 2020, Fey did confirm that a film adaptation of the musical was in the works and later in October, encouraged fans to share their dream cast for the movie.

The Possible Direct Sequel

Fans have been asking for a follow-up movie which could show where Cady Heron, Regina George, and the other Plastics are now. Not only fans, but the main cast is also willing to work in one.

In April 2020, in an interview with actor-comedian David Spade in his show Lights Out with David Spade, Lohan did admit that she wanted to return to acting with a Mean Girls movie.

She added that she was excited to work again with the team, Fey, and Mark Waters(the director). Lohan further clarified that it was all in their(Fey and Waters) hands to proceed with the idea.

Right after that, a week later, McAdams also said that she was ‘interested to return’ , while speaking on Heroes of Health: COVID-19 Stream-a-thon. McAdams explained that she wanted to play Regina George post-high school and how life turns out for her. She did emphasize on one thing that it was Fey who led the ship, so she is ‘in’ as long as Fey is.

Jonathan Bennett, who played Aaron Samuels, also showed interest. He said that half the cast was excited to be a part of the idea. Whether it becomes a movie or a series, it will be exciting to see the characters again. He also said recently that the virtual Mean Girls reunion held in October opened the door for such possibility.

And It Comes Down To…

From what the star cast says, it is clear that it was the story and the script by Fey, which did the magic. If the direct sequel happens and it is supposed to impact the same way, Tine fey has to be a part of it. On the other hand, Fey is focused on working on her Mean Girls Musical reboot.

While she hasn’t talked about the sequel recently, nor there has been a mention of a script regarding that, the possibilities of a direct sequel are mixed. Because had it not been possible, there would have never been a musical and a film adaptation of the same. You never know, maybe we could actually get a Mean Girls series.
