The fourth and final film of the Rebuild of Evangelion, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, will finally release in 2021 after almost a half-year delay due to the coronavirus pandemic. Studio Khara previously planned to release the movie alongside the third instalment, Evangelion: 3.0, but later delayed to 2015 and again delayed indefinitely.
The science-fiction films retell the story of popular mecha anime-television series, Neon Genesis Evangelion. After chief-director and writer, Hideaki Anno began working for Toho’s Shin Godzilla, Studio Khara had to hold the plans for the fourth film. He reportedly had trouble working on the third film and even suffered depression. The official pre-production of the film began after releasing of Shin Godzilla in late 2016.
Studio Khara underwent rush-checking for the film’s animation in October 2020, before entering the editing phase to have the best result. The animation studio reported that the run time of the fourth movie is more than two hours. Studio Khara showcased the first ten minutes of the film at Anime Expo 19 in Los Angeles, CCG Expo 2019 in Shanghai, and Japan Expo 2019 in Paris.
The fourth film’s preview is available at the end of the third film.
The production company has revealed the movie’s theme song. Evangelion: 3.0+1.0’s theme song will be the first Japanese-language EP, One Last Kiss by singer Utada Hikaru. Fans can download the song after the official theatrical release of the fourth film. Also, the fans can download or own the remastered versions of the previous theme song on January 27, 2021.

Hideaki Anno confirmed that the fourth film will feature a new Evangelion Unit. The new Evangelion Unit will be called the Evangelion Mark 10. This new unit will have the same colour scheme as the previous unit, Eva 09, which was destroyed by Asuka. The main storyline in the fourth film will either based on receiving messages from the future or sending messages to the past.
