A lot of us are timeless fans of James Bond movies. What began from Dr. No in 1962 starring Sean Connery is now one of the most loved spy action series, with Daniel Craig acting as the current James Bond in four movies. The fifth movie No Time To Die, is slated for release in 2021 and it would be Craig’s final film as James Bond.
What do We Mean by Bond Girls?
With every Bond movie that nears its release or is just greenlit, fans are also excited about one more thing – Who will play the Bond girl? Or who’s gonna play the love interest in the movie? A Bond girl can actually mean a lot of things.
First, the obvious thing is that it is played by a female actor. Secondly, and what it actually means, is that female character can be anything – She can be an ally to Bond, a Femme Fatale who seduces Bond with her looks and works for the enemy, a love interest, or simply someone who is an acquaintance who dies in the story.
While there are a number of actors who have played Bond girls, according to us, Eva Green and Halle Berry top our ranks when it comes to best bond girls.
About Eva Green
Eva Green is a French actress born in 1980. Initially a theater actor, she entered into movies by debuting in the 2003 movie The Dreamers. She played the role of Vesper Lynd in the Bond movie Casino Royale (2006), who oversees bond and finances him in a poker game. She later betrays Bond at the latter half of the film.
Eva initially turned down the offer but was approached again. On reading the script, she found Vesper’s character ‘deeper’ as compared to the other Bond girls. Eva’s performance was highly appreciated, with Entertainment Weekly calling her the fourth best Bond girl of all time.
IGN lauded her as best femme fatale, adding that it was Vesper that broke and eventually made Bond. She won a BAFTA award and an Empire Award for her performance.
Her other notable works include 300: Rise of an Empire (2014), Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016), and the television series Penny Dreadful (2014-16) for which she was nominated as the Best Actress in a Television Series at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards.
About Halle Berry
Born Maria Halle Berry in 1966, Berry is an American Actress. She began her career as a model and entered many beauty contests, becoming the first runner up in Miss USA pageant and reaching sixth place in the 1986 Miss World beauty pageant. She played Giacinta ‘Jinx’ Johnson, an NSA agent in the 2002 Bond movie Die Another Day, co-starring Pierce Brosnan.
Berry did the ‘surf scene’ similar to the 1962 movie Dr. No, where she wore a bikini and a knife which was a tribute to the original scene. This scene was shot in Cadiz which was cold and windy at the time of filming, so Berry had to wrap thick towels around her when not filming to stay warm. ITV voted her as the fourth toughest girl on screen of all time.
She also received an NAACP Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
Berry also played Storm in the 2000 movie X-Men, and its sequels X2 (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). She also acted in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019).
