Robert Downey Jr. Returning with Sherlock Holmes 3, Cinematic Universe Planned Like MCU, Release Date & More

Robert Downey Jr. played one of the most notable characters in the acclaimed and popular franchise, Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans still consider that he was the backbone of the franchise and he played a major role in bringing the franchise what it is today. The 55-year-old has left the cinematic universe after his character’s ultimate sacrifice in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Robert himself mentioned that he has no intention in returning to the franchise.

However, Robert has still his glorious days of filmmaking in the industry. The new report suggests that the actor wants to make the popular Sherlock Holmes franchise like the MCU. Sherlock Holmes franchise has two movies that release in 2009 and 2011. After the release of the second film, there were reports regarding the third film but couldn’t move ahead for years until recently.

Robert will reprise his role as the titular character while Jude Law will portray his assistant, Dr John Watson. Dexter Fletcher, who most recently directed the epic biopic of singer Elton John, Rocketman, will direct the third film.

The third Sherlock Holmes film is on its way and will premiere on December 22, 2021.

Robert recently appeared at the Fast Company’s Innovation Festival and talked about expanding the Sherlock Holmes franchise. He mentioned that currently there isn’t mystery-verse built anywhere, and he wants to kick off with the third Sherlock Holmes. The Judge actor further added that Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories are incredibly popular and well-known, that it would take no time to expand the cinematic universe like MCU.

There have been several other cinematic universes trying to match the success and consistency of the MCU. But, they have never achieved to reach the level. However, fans and critics believe Robert can pull this off with his expertise and experience since he has been directly working under the MCU for years.

On the other hand, Marvel fans still wish to see Robert Downey Jr. as the Iron Man in future MCU project, but he has no intention of doing that. So, we can expect that the actor would most definitely try to expand the Sherlock Holmes universe.
