China Outlaws Insulting Flag: burned flag seen in pic

Standing Committee of the Chinese Congress on Saturday passed amendments to a law that will ensure to criminalize the intentional insulting of the national flag and emblem. This comes after anti-government protesters in Hong Kong last year desecrated the Chinese flag. This is an extreme move to a relatively small issue.

The recently amended the National Flag and National Emblem Law. The new amendment will come into power from January 1. Those who will intentionally burn, mutilate, paint, deface or trample the flag or the emblem in public will be seriously investigated for criminal responsibility.

The law also has provisions that state that the national flag must not be discarded. Or displayed upside down or used in any manner that impairs the dignity and disrespects the Chinese flag. The law will also be applicable to Hong Kong and Macao.
