2020 is the year of delays. By now, we have seen so many movies getting delayed that it doesn’t seem like news anymore. But it looks like WB is so angry with 2020, that they have decided to skip 2021 too.
WB has moved batman from October 2021 to March 2022. The Flash which has both Ezra Miller and Ben Affleck has been pushed to November 4, 2022. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam doesn’t have a release date anymore. It was supposed to release towards the end of 2021. The same goes for Minecraft: The Movie. It too doesn’t have a release date. Shazam! Fury of God moves to June 2, 2023, from November 2022.
There are few WB movies that are still on the 2020/2021 calendar. Dune has been shifted to 2021 from 2020 and Wonder Woman 1984 is still holding on to it’s December 2020 release date. And the only good news is that Matrix 4 has been moved to December 2021 from April 2022.
Tenet Failed at the Box Office
There can be several reasons behind these changes from WB. Their latest release Tenet failed to make any mark on the box office. When a movie of that size and hype fails at the box office. The Studio has to reconsider its entire strategy. Furthermore, Regal Theaters just announced that they are closing all of their theaters until further notice. The only possible way to make some money could be through VOD. But that too might not be a great plan for big-budget movies. Mulan is the prime example of it.
So, it looks highly unlikely that WB is going to release any movies this year. I expect them to delay Wonder Woman too. They might stick with Matrix and Dune for 2021. But, it looks like Wonder Woman might be the only DC movie in 2021. Quite good news for Marvel, who on the other hand has three movies releasing in 2021.
