Netflix: It’s History And Fun Facts !

For mostly all of us, Netflix is our go-to place whenever we have to stream/watch something online. “Netflix and chill” is probably what we live by in this quarantine. It’s been 20 years since it was launched. Netflix has quite an interesting history. Right from something in making, to a $100 billion industry.

Netflix was founded by two serial entrepreneurs, Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings, in the august of 1997. The company first started out in Scotts Valley, California, and has grown to become one of the world’s leading internet entertainment platforms.

When it first opened, it was purely a movie rental service. Users ordered movies on the Netflix website and received DVDs in the post. When they were finished with them, they would simply post them back to Netflix in the envelopes provided.

Since the very beginning, Netflix has been very ambitious and unique in its ideas. It rarely takes the easy way out. Right from a DVD rental service to a media giant, Netflix has proved to be efficient and creative. There are many things we don’t know about Netflix yet, let’s take a deep dive into its rich history-

  • The first-ever video used by Netflix to test its abilities was an 11-minute “example show”. The show featured juggling, moon-walking, model trains, and a monologue from “Julius Caesar.”
  • It was seen that an average Netflix subscriber streams content for around two hours minimum. So basically, over 1 billion hours of content are streamed per week.
  • Netflix accounts for roughly one-third of the internet traffic, even more in this period.
  • Initially, when the owners had some difficulty in coming up with a name, they decided to go with Kibble.
