DISNEY’S LIVE-ACTION REMAKE OF MULAN HAS FACED A BACKLASH: HERE’S WHY
Disney finally released the long-awaited ‘Mulan’. The movie was looked forward to by fans all over the world. But the luck for the movie does not really seem to be the best. The controversy began when it was revealed that some parts of the movie were filmed in Xinjiang. It is the same place where the Chinese government has been committing mass human rights violations and attacks against ethnic Muslim minorities. Some people who managed to escape the area have unfolded some terrible news, most of which China refuses to agree with.
This comes about as a sad irony for social justice warriors. The theme of the movie is about the liberation of a young girl who wants to be a soldier. But she is denied the opportunity because of her gender. The story then concludes that being different is always alright. Well, except when you’re an Uyghur Muslim. The mass genocide has been a big debate among political delegates. China does not deny all the claims. They have confirmed that a plan is being executed over the people. It has also been claimed that Uyghurs have been put into ‘re-education camps’. Chinese authorities have not given proper insight as to what that stands for.
Human rights activists and Muslims all over the world have joined the movement to boycott the latest Disney installment. Recently, H&M has also cut ties with China in suspicion of being indirectly associated with forced labor workers. Popular activists like CJ Werleman and Khalid Beydoun are an active part of the Twitter movement.
WHERE DID THE MOVEMENT START?
To put it broadly, the movement started in Hong Kong. You may already know about the protests in Hong Kong last year. The youth came out on the roads to protest against a law that would allow extradition from Hong Kong to mainland China. The protests also demanded a solid inquiry about police brutality.
Joshua Wong claimed on Twitter that the industry bows down to Beijing. The Tweet was a hit and was agreed upon as well as disagreed among the users.
