The ninth instalment of the popular Fast and Furious franchise could have already hit the theatres if the coronavirus pandemic thing didn’t happen. The filmmakers pushed the release date one year later, from the original April 2020 release date. Dominic Torretto and the team will rejoin to fight against another great threat — his brother, Jakob Torretto.
Most of the primary characters will return for the sequel that includes Han (portrayed by Sung Kang) — who was presumed dead in previous movies. The film’s official trailers have already featured these primary characters, who are making their return. But, the trailer didn’t feature two of the prominent characters of the film — Luke Hobbs. The report claims that Dwayne Johnson wouldn’t appear in the film as the special agent Luke Hobbs.
Johnson’s Luke Hobbs is another fan-favourite character of the franchise. He has been hanging out in the franchise since 2011’s Fast Five. His popularity made the producers release a spin-off movie entirely focused on his and his arch-rival story, Deckard Shaw. Johnson along with Jason Statham recently starred in a spin-off film, Hobbs & Shaw, which received both critical and commercial success.
Will Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs join Toretto’s gang?
When asked why he isn’t returning to Fast 9, the 48-year-old actor responded that there were schedule conflicts with Hobbs & Shaw. But there may be another completely different reason behind this. Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson had a feud before the release of 2017’s The Fate of the Furious. Multiple reports cited that the two veteran actors weren’t even in the talking terms and weren’t seeing each other. They even slammed each other on social media, and once the Jumanji actor called Vin a candy-ass.
However, after the release of the Hobbs & Shaw, things took a different turn. Diesel appreciated their work on the new film, and in return, Johnson thanked him for support. He even mentioned in one of his Instagram posts that he will see Torretto soon. This means that Dwayne is still excited to work on the Fast and Furious franchise. Since he didn’t take part in the production of Fast 9, it’s quite impossible to expect his appearance.
But, The Rock could still make a return to join Dom’s Crew, in Fast 10. The filmmakers already confirmed that the Fast ten would be the final movie in the Fast Saga. We could probably see a cameo appearance of Hobbs in the post-credits of Fast 9.
