Crew Dragon Demo-2 is ready to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean, bring two astronauts back to the earth from International Space Station. The splashdown will mark the culmination of the historic mission jointly operated by SpaceX and NASA. After the successful splashdown, the event will help the aerospace manufacturer company, SpaceX to receive certification to allow frequent manned spaceflight missions.
The landing of the SpaceX Capsule will also mark the first water landing since 1975. Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley have already undocked the ISS and are on board the Crew Dragon for multi-hour descent. Crew Dragon will land near Pensacola off the coast of Florida later on Sunday. The astronauts reportedly left the International Space Station at 7:30 PM EDT, on August 1, Saturday.
Crew Dragon’s all maneuvers are fully automated during the splashdown and on the landing portion. In fact, the capsule handled all the maneuvers even while during the takeoff to ISS. SpaceX has built the automated capsule for any trips to or from the ISS. The space transportation company has previously flown the capsule without a crew, and was amazingly successful.
SpaceX crews are awaiting Behnken and Hurley in the Gulf of Mexico to retrieve and recover the astronauts. Behnken and Hurley will reach the landing site at 2:48 PM EDT on August 2. This will successfully conclude the commercial spaceflight that began with the launch of Endeavour on May 30.
The capsule will reportedly depart at the rate of 17,500 mph from the International Space Station. Upon reaching the earth’s atmosphere, the capsule will unleash the parachute and slowly splash at the rate of just 15 mph. People around the globe will be able to live stream on NASA’s official YouTube channel.
Two boats containing the personnel from SpaceX will move towards the landing zone, shortly after capsule’s safe landing. One boat will examine the condition of the capsule while the other boat will recover the parachutes. Sometime later a larger boat arrives at the site, which will pull the capsule out of the water. The hatch is then opened and then the astronauts will get out from the capsule after 63-day trip to orbit.
Behnken and Hurley will exit from the capsule in about an hour after their landing at 2:48 PM EDT. They will then fly to Houston after performing medical checks.
